What is a Sharing Circle?
“Allow yourself to express what lives within. Be an active listener. In the balance of giving and receiving words, find your place in the world. All in a safe and sacred space.”
Imagine a place where talking is completely different from your normal world. When you share your story there is no one that interupts you, gives you advice, or fills in the space if you take a few seconds to think or breathe. When emotions are expressed, they are not downplayed but simply allowed.
Originating from the Native Americans, the Sharing Circle ritual was a place of equality, of being given the time and space you need to express yourself and of experiencing others around you as an active listener. In this ritual there is one talking stick and a few guidelines:
• In the circle we are all equal, there is no leader and no follower.
• The only person that is allowed to speak is the one holding the talking stick.
• We do not interupt anyone’s sharing in any way, shape or form.
• As participants, we listen actively, feeling into the words that are spoken.
• When you speak, speak from the heart.
